Description du poste

The "Advanced Superconducting and Cryogenic Experimental powertraiN Demonstrator" (ASCEND) program is a 3-year effort to explore the impact of superconducting materials and cryogenic temperatures on the performance of an aircraft's electrical propulsion systems.

ASCEND consists of a transnational team in charge of developing an ambitious, futuristic and disruptive project on an advanced superconducting and cryogenic experimental powertrain for hybrid/full electric propulsion system. It will be composed of a superconducting DC network with protections, a cryogenic motor drive, a superconducting electric motor and of a cryogenic system. The objective of this project is to demonstrate the feasibility and the potential of these technologies to enable high-power electric flight with partners from industry, research institutes and start-ups around the world.

The opportunity of a Cryogenic system test design internship has risen within the team in charge of designing, manufacturing and testing a cryogenic and superconducting powertrain for aircraft applications, based in Toulouse. The internship will be a rewarding experience if you are passionate about aeronautics, sciences and new technologies. You will be part of an ambitious and flexible project execution with a diverse technical team, with partners from worldwide industry and academia, start-ups in a dynamic and emulating environment.

This internship will ideally begin in the autumn of 2021 (start date subject to flexibility), and will last for a period of 4 to 6 months.

Main Missions

As an intern in Cryogenics system test design intern (m/f), you will be part of the ASCEND (Advanced Superconducting and Cryogenic Experimental powertraiN Demonstrator) team and evaluate technical design choices for DC/AC distribution (2 kA) including demountable connections between the different components in the system. The learning objective of the internship is to acquire knowledge of techniques, instruments and tools related to thermal and electrical measurements at cryogenic temperatures.

Learning goals and tasks:

As a Cryogenic system test design (m/f), you will be part of the team in charge of designing the cryogenic system and develop cryogenic technologies. Your main activities will be:

  • understand some basic behaviours of cryogenic systems and components

  • perform some basic electrical and thermal calculations and simulations for validation of the measurements

  • set up and validation of a dedicated test bench for characterization of materials and components at cryogenic temperatures

  • set up the facility where electrical and thermal measurements at cryogenic temperatures will be performed, using the proper instruments and technique for each measurement

Required formation and skills:

  • Education: BUT génie thermique et énergie (BAC+2)

  • Autonomy, Adaptability, Availability, Accountability

  • Team-Player

  • Hands-on and solution oriented attitude

  • Passionate about technology, science

  • Sharing the values of transparency, courage, humility, empathy

  • Willing to have fun.

Finally, it is paramount to be curious, open minded, creative, challenging, because in UpNext, we try new ways of working.
