The "Advanced Superconducting and Cryogenic Experimental powertraiN Demonstrator" (ASCEND) program is a 3-year effort to explore the impact of superconducting materials and cryogenic temperatures on the performance of an aircraft's electrical propulsion systems.

ASCEND consists of a transnational team in charge of developing an ambitious, futuristic and disruptive project on an advanced superconducting and cryogenic experimental powertrain for hybrid/full electric propulsion system. It will be composed of a superconducting AC and DC network with protections, a cryogenic motor drive, a superconducting electric motor and of a cryogenic system.

The opportunity of a Superconducting Distribution R&T engineering internship has risen within the team, based in Toulouse. The internship will be a rewarding experience if you are passionate about aeronautics, sciences and new technologies. You will be part of an ambitious and flexible project execution with a diverse technical team, with partners from worldwide industry and academia, start-ups in a dynamic and emulating environment.

This internship will ideally begin in the autumn of 2021 (start date subject to flexibility), and will last for a period of 4 to 6 months.

Your Missions

As Superconducting Distribution R&T engineering intern, your main mission will be to perform multiphysics studies in order to understand and optimize technologies in the superconducting DC and AC distribution of ASCEND. These models will be used to optimize the design of HTS cables and current leads in AC or DC at around 2 kA. The predictions will be supported by experimental tests in our cryogenic lab.

Learning goals and tasks:

  • Understand the challenges in designing a superconducting distribution for a powertrain.

  • Perform modelling of AC losses in superconducting cables.

  • Optimization of current leads using COMSOL and analytical techniques.

  • Validation of results with experimental setup in cryogenic lab.

Your boarding pass

In order to be a successful candidate, you will be able to demonstrate some or all of the following skills and competencies:

  • Student in electrical engineering or applied physics;

  • Strong mathematical and physics background;

  • Knowledge in electromagnetics and electric circuits;

  • Experience in COMSOL Multiphysics modelling;

  • Skills in electrical measurements;

  • Some initial knowledge in superconductivity and/or cryogenics is an advantage;

  • Understanding of electrical, thermal and mechanical modeling;

  • Programming skills with for example Python or Matlab;
